Difference between "if" and "whether"

If
"If" is used in conditional constructions.
  • If it rains, then we won't go to the park. 
  • He says he'll come to the party if and only if she comes too.

Whether
"Whether" is used to express doubt or to indicate choices or possibilities .
  • I don't know whether they were invited. 
  • I had to decide whether or not to respond to his letter. 
  • Maria asked whether I preferred Greek or Italian food.
