Difference between "allow" and "let"

Allow
"Allow" is used to give permission. It can be followed by object + infinitive.
  • We don't allow smoking in this hotel.
  • We don't allow people to smoke in the hotel.

Let
"Let" is also used to give permission, but it is less formal of "allow". In addition, It is followed by an object + infinitive without to; and it cannot be used in the passive form, you use the verb allow.
  • Please let me get you a drink.
  • He wasn't allowed (not was let) to go out and get a drink.
