How to make requests and offers in English

In this post we learn some of the common ways for making requests and offers.

Asking someone to do something for you:
  • Can you + infinitive ..., please?
  • Could you + infinitive ..., please?
  • Would you mind + verb+ing ..., please?
Note: infinitive is without "to", because "can" and "could" are modal verbs.

Asking if you can do something:
  • Can I + infinitive ... ?
  • Could I + infinitive ... (please)?
  • Shall I + infinitive ...?
  • Would you like ...
Responding:
  • Yes please.
  • Yes, sure.
  • Yes, of course.
  • yes, certainly.
  • I'm sorry, but...
  • I'm afraid that...
  • No thanks, I...
